SARA National's Celebration of Architecture and Design Awards Program

> > > 2017 WINNERS ANNOUNCED < < <

Awards ceremony honors the largest, most diverse group of entrants in program’s 61-year history

NEW YORK – On Friday, October 20, the Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) announced the winners of  its National Design Awards 2017 Program at a gala event held at The New Museum in Manhattan. The awards were presented by SARA Chairperson Dennis Dong to an audience of more than 180 guests and supporters of outstanding achievements in architecture and design.

This year, members of the organization’s National Design Awards committee strategically expanded the program’s submission categories to encompass a wider variety of project types and greater representation of S/M/L/XL sized firms. As a result, SARA received a record-setting number of submissions from domestic and international design professionals, as well as students from six universities. Industries represented included architecture, landscape architecture, industrial design, graphic design and urban planning.

“The range of projects we received from firms of all sizes reflects the diversity of the modern design profession and reaffirms the relevance of SARA’s enhanced competition format,” said Dong. “It was a rewarding challenge for our jurors to evaluate such an eclectic mix of projects. We strive to give designers, whose work may otherwise go overlooked in traditional architectural competitions, a stage to showcase their unique talents.”

Judged by renowned design professionals Christian Dinkeloo, Dr. Carol Bentel, Michael Macaluso, Suzanne Musho and David Stofcik, this year’s competition generated more than 200 entries in seventeen categories. Projects ranged from a neighborhood nail salon to the global headquarters of a diesel and alternative fuels engine manufacturer to an urban salt storage facility shaped like the product it holds: a grain of salt. Sixty projects received distinctions of Excellence, Merit and Honor in their respective categories, and one distinguished project – Diane Middlebrook Studios by CSS Architecture – was selected for the Jury’s Award of Distinction.
